FinChat: Real-Time Messaging with Firebase and Twilio

FinChat began with a simple idea: staying in touch should feel instant, private, and effortless, whether you are chatting with a friend, coordinating a project team, or jumping on a quick call. Aveqro designed and built FinChat as a cross-platform messaging app with real-time chat, voice calls, and video calls, powered by Firebase and Twilio. This case study explains how we took the concept from sketches to a reliable product used every day.

The challenge

The founders wanted a messaging app that could compete with established players on speed and reliability, yet remain light enough to run well on mid-range phones and unstable mobile networks. Messages had to arrive in milliseconds, calls had to connect without confusing setup, and user data had to stay protected. They also needed a single codebase for iOS and Android to keep the budget under control and the release schedule realistic.

Project goals

Together with the client we defined clear, measurable goals for the first release:

  • Deliver one-to-one and group messaging with delivery and read receipts
  • Offer clear voice and video calls with fast connection times
  • Support images, documents, and voice notes with reliable uploads
  • Work smoothly on weak networks, with offline queuing for outgoing messages
  • Keep the architecture ready for rapid growth in users

Our approach

We started with a two-week discovery sprint, mapping user journeys and identifying the moments that matter most, such as opening the app, finding a contact, and starting a call. Our designers produced clickable prototypes that we tested with real users before any code was written. This early feedback led to a simpler onboarding flow with phone number verification and a cleaner conversation screen that keeps the message box and call buttons within easy thumb reach.

Key features

FinChat launched with a focused set of features that work together seamlessly:

  • Real-time one-to-one and group chats with typing indicators and presence status
  • HD video calls and voice calls through Twilio
  • Photo, video, document, and voice note sharing
  • Push notifications that respect quiet hours
  • Message search, starred messages, and media galleries
  • Privacy controls such as blocking, reporting, and disappearing messages

Technology and architecture

We built the mobile apps with Flutter, which allowed a single team to deliver a consistent, high-quality experience on iOS and Android. Firebase Authentication handles secure sign in, Cloud Firestore synchronises messages in real time, and Cloud Storage manages media files. Cloud Functions run server-side logic such as notifications and moderation checks. Twilio Programmable Video and Voice power calls, with access tokens generated by a small Node.js service so credentials never reach the device. Security rules restrict each user to their own conversations.

Overcoming technical challenges

Real-time apps behave differently in the real world than in the lab. We tuned Firestore queries and pagination so long chat histories load instantly, and we added local caching so conversations open without waiting for the network. For calls, we implemented adaptive video quality that lowers resolution on weak connections instead of dropping the call. Extensive testing on dozens of devices and network conditions helped us find and fix edge cases before launch.

Results and impact

After launch, FinChat delivered a fast, dependable experience that earned strong early reviews. Message delivery stayed consistently fast, call connection rates were high, and crash-free sessions remained above 99 percent. Users particularly praised the simple interface and the reliability of calls on mobile data. The client now has a scalable foundation that supports steady growth without costly rewrites.

Great messaging apps disappear into the background, because the connection is all that matters.

Looking ahead

FinChat continues to evolve, with end-to-end encryption options, screen sharing, and business accounts on the roadmap. If you are planning a real-time communication product, the mobile and backend team at Aveqro Technologies can help you move from idea to launch with confidence.
