Every town has businesses, jobs, events, and services that residents want to find, but the information is usually scattered across noticeboards, social media groups, and word of mouth. CityConnect was designed to bring it all together in one trusted place. Aveqro built the community portal that connects locals with nearby businesses, job opportunities, events, and resources, helping money and opportunity stay within the community.
The challenge
The founders saw that small businesses struggled to be found online, while residents had no single place to check what was happening nearby. A successful portal needed useful content from day one, an effortless way for businesses to list themselves, and search that actually returned relevant local results. It also had to remain free from spam and outdated listings, which quickly destroy trust in directory sites.
Project goals
Together we set the following goals:
- Create a searchable directory of local businesses and services
- Provide a job board for local employers and job seekers
- Publish community events and announcements
- Give businesses easy self-service tools to manage their listings
- Keep information fresh, accurate, and spam free
Our approach
We started by researching how residents search for local help, and discovered they use short, practical phrases such as plumber near me or part-time jobs. This guided the information structure and search design. Our team created a friendly, map-centred interface where categories, filters, and location are always within reach. A phased launch plan let us release the directory first, then add jobs and events once the core was proven.
Key features
CityConnect combines several community tools in one portal:
- Business directory with categories, reviews, photos, and opening hours
- Map-based search showing results near the visitor
- Job board with employer accounts, applications, and email alerts
- Events calendar with reminders and easy sharing
- Business dashboards for editing profiles and responding to reviews
- Verified badges and reporting tools to maintain quality
Technology and architecture
The portal uses Laravel and MySQL on the backend, with a Vue.js interface that updates results instantly as users adjust filters. Elasticsearch powers fast, relevant search with support for typos and local terms, while the Google Maps API provides geolocation and mapping. Business owners verify their listings by email or phone, and automated reminders ask them to confirm their details periodically so the directory stays accurate. Pages are optimised for search engines, helping local businesses reach more residents.
Overcoming technical challenges
Quality control was our main concern. We created moderation workflows that review new listings and flag suspicious content automatically, and added a simple report button so the community can help keep the portal clean. Search relevance also needed tuning, so we adjusted ranking to favour closer, verified, and recently updated businesses. Careful pagination and caching kept map and search pages responsive even with thousands of listings.
Results and impact
CityConnect has become a useful daily resource for residents, with steady growth in listings, job posts, and visitors. Local businesses report new customers and enquiries coming through their profiles, and employers appreciate reaching candidates who live nearby. The portal has strengthened the local community by making information easier to find and share.
Strong communities start when people can easily find each other.
Looking ahead
Planned features include resident accounts, neighbourhood forums, and offers from local shops. If you are creating a directory, marketplace, or community portal, the team at Aveqro Technologies can help you design a platform that serves your whole community.
